David Nail knows what it’s like to stand on the edge and wonder how the dream feels. While he can’t buy people their own island in the sun or a new convertible, he realizes there’s a passion about how it feels when the music hits the fans that is indescribable. To that end, the Grammy-nominated singer has been reaching out to the fans for each of his shows on the Billy Currington tour to let a pair of dreamers sit in the wings for his set.

“To feel what we feel when we’re onstage, and with the fans giving us all of that energy back…,” says the band director’s son from Kennett, Missouri, “there is nothing like that feeling. It’s not something you can’t put into words, and it’s something I wish everyone who’s ever sung along to ‘Red Light’ or ‘Let It Rain’ or ‘Turning Home’ could feel: to know that experience.

 “I realize I can’t give away rides on a jet or take someone to Las Vegas for a weekend, but I’ve been so blessed and so fortunate, especially with the support my fans have given me. I wanted to give something back… to let them experience what this is that they’ve made possible for me. So, I figured I’d share the dream with at least a few.”

Working with local radio stations and through Twitter, Nail has sought out fans who want to share a moment of what it’s like. Response has been good, and in some ways, it’s made the Currington tour experience even more meaningful.

“As a big fan of David’s for several years, getting to meet him in person (FINALLY!!) and sit onstage during his concert was an absolute dream come true,” wrote Christy Bise about the Salem, Virginia show. “The kindness and generosity shown by David was something we’ll never forget. The whole experience far exceeded anything we could have ever imagined.”

“When we get emails like this, it reminds me how powerful all of this is,” Nail says of the response. “I’ve been able to tour with Taylor Swift and my friends in Lady A, so I know what this is… but to be able to let someone else sit right there and feel it, too… that’s almost as powerful: seeing the look on people’s faces the first time the crowd hits them.

“We can’t do this everywhere, but when we can, it’s awesome.”

Warming up with headlining dates at the Boathouse in Myrtle Beach, SC  (5/16) and the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (5/17), Nail heads into his final weekend with Billy Currington at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC (5/18) and the Rome River Jam in Rome, GA (5/19). After a fun run and “The Sound of a Million Dreams” hitting the Top 40, Nail knows this weekend he’ll get to make a few more dreams come true.

While people think of Grammy-nominated country vocalist David Nail as a singer’s singer, it’s easy to forget that he’s also a compelling songwriter. The folks at Music Row didn’t miss that fact; announcing their annual Awards nominees, David Nail’s history-making #1 “Let It Rain” placed him among the nominees for their Breakthrough Songwriter Award.

Currently enjoying the final days of a tour with Billy Currington and Kip Moore, Nail’s nomination comes during a magical 12 months. In addition to singing at the 7^th game of the World Series, where his home team Cardinals took it all, the Kennett, Missourian was asked to take part in an elite performance series at the Sundance Film Festival, sold out headlining Midwestern and Southern tours, sang “Let It Rain” on “The Tonight Show” the week it was #1, hit the road with Gavin DeGraw, and is now watching the title track to The Sound of a Million Dreams climb the charts.

“The thing I love about ‘The Sound of a Million Dreams’ is the way it’s all about how powerful songs are… the way they hold your life for you, so when you hear them, you’re right back there,” Nail says. “To me, that was everything we were trying to do with ‘Let It Rain.’ How would it be if you were ever in that position: having to admit you’d done something wrong, then facing the consequences? How would that feel? How do you capture that? This nomination makes me feel like… maybe… we did.”

As “The Sound of a Million Dreams” cracks the Top 40 at country radio, the list of songs and stories that inspire his fans just keeps growing. In fact, the Grammy-nominated vocalist is hoping people will Tweet him (@davidnail) to tell him which songs, what memories, and the last time they experienced the miracle of how songs transform moments.

“Some people tell me about karaoke memories,” says Nail, “and other people tell me about friends who were killed, grandparents who passed on, the girl who left them… the stories are so personal and often a long time ago, yet when they hear a song on the radio, it’s like it’s happening again… right in that moment. The more stories I hear, the more responses I wanna see.”

On Nail’s Facebook page, one fan cited “Amanda” by Don Williams as their touchstone song, saying “I can still my Daddy’s asthmatic voice singing this song,” while someone else named, “Holes in the Floor of Heaven” with “Both times I found out each of my grandparents died, that song was playing. Sad, but true. And both times, it was raining.” Also, “Freebird” was listed with “Brings me back to spreading my dad’s ashes on my mother’s grave. I can picture it clearly.”

“You don’t always think about that stuff,” says Nail. “Because it’s what happens to the song after you sing it… It goes into the world, and then it becomes the people who live their lives in your music. I don’t think a lot of us realize – and reading these stories on Facebook and Twitter has sure given me a sense I’m not the only one whose life is captured on the radio.”

The video begins with video footage of a six-year-old David being introduced to play drums with an orchestra before shifting to the theater, where a grown David is seated center stage. David’s band members gradually join him onstage as the song plays with videos and photos from throughout David’s life flashing in the background, including images from his childhood and video from his wedding day.

As the video wraps, home video footage of David’s grandfather holding David’s first No. 1 plaque for “Let It Rain” plays. In the clip, his grandfather tells him how proud he is and promises to join David in Vegas the next time he’s out there.

On Friday, May 4, 2012, Suite101 had the pleasure to interview country singer and MCA Nashville recording artist David Nail. He talks about his singles “Let It Rain,” “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” as well as his new album and tour with Billy Currington.

The title track of his sophomore CD, The Sound of a Million Dreams, which was released on March 5, 2012, via his label, is his current radio single. “It’s a song that talks about my love for music, as well as everybody’s love for music. I always say every night at my shows that we are there to let loose, sing along, hang out and have a good time, but we are there for the love of music and we have a tendency to reference things of our past. I think that really describes all that really well.”

His vocals on this tune are slightly reminiscent to those of Rascal Flatts lead singer Gary LeVox. “That’s a great compliment! Gary is a great singer and he is definitely known as ‘the voice,’” he states.

David filmed a music video for the song which was directed by Chris Hicky. It includes archive home footage and photographs from David’s childhood, such as his father introducing him (as a young kid) at a concert where he played the drums, and it concludes with his grandfather holding the commemorative plaque of his chart-topping single for “Let It Rain.”

Takes “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” Spends Them On Beer & Baseball

Boston: Since the first of the year, David Nail has spent maybe four days at home, or rather four days when he wasn’t performing, recording or celebrating his first #1 for the record-setting “Let It Rain.” So rare is his time off, that when he realized he had a few days to spend during his current tour with Billy Currington interlaced with his own headlining shows, he decided to spend them in a city that’s grown to be a big part of his life and fan base.

“I’m kinda surprised,” acknowledges the Grammy nominated country vocalist of the city he’s spending his few days off in. “I’m a band director’s kid from Kennett, Missouri… which is three worlds away from the guys out in South Boston-- except for one thing: when you cut the core of the people where I’m from and the people I meet up here, they’re really the same. They work hard as hell, they are loyal to their friends and their family, and they know the difference between someone who’s real and someone who’s posing.

“In a weird way, I’ve never felt more at home… except when I’m home.”

After taking in a Red Sox game last night, Nail and his friends wandered over to South Boston’s L Street Tavern for a few beers and to talk about the game. Billed as the home of the Academy Award winning film “Good Will Hunting,” it has been a haunt for the young man who got to sing during the 7^th inning stretch at the 7^th game of this year’s World Series since his love affair with Boston began a few years ago.

Earlier this week, Music Director Ginny Rogers Tweeted, “Sound of a Million Dreams is on @Country1025WKLB right now. @davidnail Song of the Year in my opinion” – demonstrating the passion his latest single is eliciting in some very powerful markets.

Tonight, Nail will again hit Fenway to see the Red Sox play the Oakland A’s. With cred-rocker Will Hoge – who sang on The Sound of A Million Dreams’ wistful “Catherine” -- also in Boston for a gig, will the man with the pair of golden downloads go sit in at a steamy club with his friend? Or will he once again turn up at the L Street Tavern, where they treat him like a local.

“Hard to say,” Nail demurs. “Depending on how many innings, maybe we’ll just take the day trying to do it all… It’s called life, and it’s something I try to do between the songs. That way when it comes time to make the records, I have something to sing about.”

The feeling is mutual. “When these things start popping up in your Twitter feed, it stops you in your tracks,” Nail explains. “I knowhow I feel about this song, but when people I like and respect so much share the same sentiment, that’s when I know… there is a place in the world for great songs-- songs that talk about the power of music and how much it means to you in the course of your day. I think we too often take that for granted. Nashville, TN: When David Nail headed to the historic Alabama Theatre in Birmingham, he knew that the dreams songs held for people were as vast as the people themselves – and it made his goal of creating a video for the title track to his The Sound of a Million Dreams something that could evoke those meanings without taking away people’s most essential truths. Working with award-winning director Chris Hicky, the singer, recently tapped as one of People Country’s Hottest Guys, created a tour de force music video that balances the song’s elegance with the passion the Kennett, Missourian brings to his music.

“That was the hardest thing,” Nail acknowledges. “Knowing how specific certain songs can be to me – and knowing it’s like that for other people, too. I don’t wanna drown their version with my memories, but I always wanted to make sure people understood how personal music is to me and how much of my life is tied up in these songs: both the ones that I sing and the ones that I love.”

CMT: Country Music Television – where music turns to images – recognized both the intent and the execution of “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” selecting it as a World Premiere during their blockbuster Big New Music Weekend. The Grammy nominated vocalist, who co-wrote his first #1 (“Let It Rain”), joins superstars Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, The Civil Wars, Eric Church and Kenny Chesney with Tim McGraw for what will be CMT’s biggest spring video event.

“I think that’s one of the things about CMT: they give all the songs they play a visual reference point. You can see the singer in the moment, and that can be a powerful thing. So powerful, as Chris (Hicky) and I discussed, that we wanted to be careful to make this video in a way that anyone watching it could feel themselves inside this song and not be overwhelmed by the images.”

Still, it’s hard not to be moved by the video clip of Nail’s father introducing his 6-year old son who comes out to the drums at a music recital, or watching the young man come of age. It is in making the personal universal that the video for “Dreams” finds much of its power. Closing with footage of his maternal Grandfather saying “Next time I'll come to Vegas…,” you see how deep the blood runs.

The rugged, dark-haired former baseball player is certainly a full-grown man. It’s not just the songs he sings, but the physicality he brings with him. “Obviously, I take this seriously,” he says. “Just listen to where these songs go. ‘The Sound of A Million Dreams’ is how music sustained me when there was nothing else. Music takes me back when I need to remember, and gives me a reason to go on. Maybe the seriousness helps…”

Having wrapped his tour with Gavin DeGraw, Nail is currently on the road with Billy Currington. With his band in tow, Grammy-nominated vocalist David Nail made his way to the historic Alabama Theater in Birmingham, Alabama to film the music video for his newest single, “The Sound of a Million Dreams.” Working with noted director Chris Hicky, Nail worked to create the essence of music’s ability to capture one’s life without reducing the video to a storyline or series of obvious images.

“Everyone has that song, or songs,” says the band director’s son from Kennett, Missouri. “That’s the most amazing thing about music: the way songs can hold your life. It does for me, and for just about everybody I know… So, I didn’t want this video to take anything away from the dreams that other people have in their music.”

The team wanted an older theatre, something that suggested the amount of music that had been played there and the number of lives that had passed through the building. They wanted to bring to the forefront the notion of how music marking lives is ongoing. The Alabama Theater, built in 1927, was chosen, in part, because of the strong relationship Nail has had with the Birmingham market since performing unplugged at the Bama Rising Concert, a show put together by music legends Alabama featuring the Commodores (sans Lionel Richie), Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

“The people there are so soulful,” he explains. “You can feel the music moving through them, and you know it’s a part of who they are. We didn’t even use extra people in our video, but you can feel their passion for the songs and artists in the air.”

With a stark stage and warm light, the music video begins with David alone onstage. Slowly, the musicians appear as their instruments rise up in the arrangement. Equally as powerful, Hicky, the man responsible for the 2011 Academy of Country Music Video of the Year, projects footage of David from the age of 6 until now throughout the scene. The slide show displays still photographs of his infancy onwards on various surfaces to cement dreams into music.

“The Sound of a Million Dreams” is catching a lot of ears. Beyond quickly becoming a tour de force live moment in his shows, USA Today placed the song on this week’s playlist alongside an eclectic mix that includes Susan Justice, Chuck Mead, Birdy, David Olney, Haley Reinhart and Tommy Womack. Comparing the song to the equally soul-stirring “Walking In Memphis,” USA Today’s Brian Mansfield opines, “Nail finds the same inspiration in Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger that Marc Cohn did in Al Green and Muriel Wilkins.”

Fresh from his first #1, the record-setting “Let It Rain,” David Nail knows how these dreams sound. Finishing his tour with Gavin DeGraw – who commented on how so many people had made a big deal of the pairing, where DeGraw only saw two singers with soulful songs – the man who got to sing at Game 7 of the 2011 World Series now heads out on the road with Billy Currington.
